Series 2: United States, 1965–1975
In Series 2 we dig into the transformative decade-long period of American history, 1965-'75. Tim and Jeremy paint a picture of what life was like in late '60s New York City, spending time on the drug that defines the period - Acid - and the first experiments in DJ culture that were soon to follow. Inspired as always by the life and work of David Mancuso, we hear about the alternative model of ‘Loft Living’ that took over so much of the city’s downtown.
The transition from Fordist to Post-Fordist ‘regimes of accumulation’ is told through a three-part mini-series spanning the influential labels Motown and SalSoul, and we spend time enjoying some of the excellent emergent genres of the time, with Funk, Feminist Soul Proto-Disco and Disco itself all having dedicated genres.
As always, these music cultures are embedded in the social and political background from which they emerged, and exemplified by excellent tunes from deep within the LITM record collection.
